Route 127.
Five of the Hoenn League’s top powerhouses began battling Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre.
Judging from the current situation, Groudon and Kyogre clearly had yet to recover. Their battle patterns were rigid, and they were still in a rampaging state, recklessly unleashing their powerful moves with every intention of causing massive destruction. Earlier, Fairy Elite Four Terrance had suppressed the two great Legendaries simultaneously. Now Steven, Sidney, Phoebe, Glacia, and Drake were equally unwilling to be outdone. Truthfully, they had also been looking forward to the experience of battling Legendaries for a long time.
Although reason told them that it would be best if a battle never occurred, now that things had reached this point, the five of them were instead beginning to enjoy themselves.
As some of the strongest Trainers of the present era, battles conducted under conventional rules could no longer satisfy their desire to pursue an even higher level. The appearance of Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre had come at just the right time to satisfy their hunger for battle.
Mega Absol, Zoroark, Sharpedo, Mandibuzz, Mega Glalie, Walrein, Vanilluxe, Froslass, Banette, Mismagius, Drifblim, Chandelure, Dusknoir, Mega Sableye, Altaria, Dragalge, Kingdra, Flygon, Mega Salamence, a Shiny Mega Metagross, Aerodactyl, Claydol, Skarmory, Archeops, Cradily, and Armaldo—a total of twenty-six Pokémon. These were the Pokémon that the four Elite Four and Steven had carefully selected as suitable for the current battlefield.
Centered around these Pokémon, the five powerhouses formed several cores from multiple angles, attempting to combine their strength in battle against Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre.
It had to be said that although these twenty-six Pokémon were fewer in number than those of the Fairy Army, their overall quality was in no way inferior to Terrance’s main Pokémon. Moreover, every single one of them had room to contribute, unlike Terrance’s Tyranitar and Arcanine, which were awkwardly unable to take the field. The instant the twenty-six Pokémon clashed with Groudon and Kyogre, astonishing shockwaves erupted from the battle. The collision of moves created an extraordinarily magnificent and shocking spectacle. Even from a great distance away, Sootopolis City could feel the tremors coming from here.
If what Terrance had suppressed earlier had been these twenty-six Pokémon rather than the two Super-ancient Pokémon, the Fairy Domain probably would not have lasted very long before being broken by these five Top Trainers, each possessing both talent and deep foundations.
Compared with the rampaging Groudon and Kyogre, Steven and the others all possessed mature battle theories and exceptional intelligence. This accumulation of knowledge and experience was precisely the foundation that allowed Trainers to command weaker Pokémon to defeat stronger opponents.
Even while fighting in an environment as disadvantageous as the ocean, humanity’s strongest Trainers still displayed power in no way inferior to Legendary Pokémon.
For a time, the two forces representing humanity and the Super-ancient Pokémon actually fought to a standstill.
Although Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre possessed astonishing defenses and destructive power, their enormous bodies meant they were not adept at dodging. Taking this into account, the League’s Elite Four used a variety of methods to magnify this weakness to the greatest extent possible.
In addition, Trainers were also skilled at making use of favorable weather and terrain conditions.
After rapidly absorbing the power of the Primordial Sea released when Kyogre broke free from its icy prison, Steven’s Cradily’s Storm Drain Ability was immediately elevated to a new level. It then leapt onto Kyogre’s body and took root, intending to gradually wear down Kyogre’s stamina with Giga Drain.
“Exhaust the stamina of the two Super-ancient Pokémon and find a way to make them fall asleep… Is this plan really going to work?” Phoebe asked as she commanded her Ghost-type Pokémon to inflict negative status conditions on the two Super-ancient Pokémon, coordinating with Elite Four Sidney’s tactics while creating opportunities for Elite Four Drake to attack.
Twenty-six Pokémon, each with clearly defined roles. Through the use of different moves, they had actually begun to toy with the two overwhelmingly powerful Super-ancient Pokémon. Without a doubt, this was a battle of attrition.
In the eyes of top powerhouses, this was indeed merely a battle of attrition. But if footage of this battle were circulated, every single detail within it could potentially become textbook-level classic tactical instructions.
Two thousand years ago, the Hoenn region had been helpless in the face of the Super-ancient Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre. But now, it possessed the ability to contend with them on equal footing.
“Hypnosis failed…”
After some time, the battle of attrition reached a critical stage. Everyone found an opportunity to deploy the large-scale Hypnosis weapon transported by the League, but as the two Super-ancient Pokémon reinforced themselves with the power of their Abilities, not only did Hypnosis fail, it instead drove Kyogre and Groudon into an even greater frenzy.
Primordial Sea and Desolate Land could hardly coexist at close range. Both Pokémon wanted to spread their power outward and affect a larger area, but doing so could only lead to one result: the two forces colliding with each other and triggering an incomparably violent explosion. This was what gave the Elite Four the greatest headache. Elite Four Sidney touched his arm, which had been burned into a bloody mess, and bared his teeth helplessly.
In a battle like this, the Trainer was undoubtedly the weakest link. Even the slightest insignificant impact could doom a Trainer beyond recovery.
“Monstrous stamina.” After Mega Metagross smashed Kyogre into the sea with a Meteor Mash, Kyogre emerged completely unharmed and sent Metagross flying dozens of meters away with a single fin slap. Steven immediately felt a headache coming on.
As the battle continued, the four Elite Four and Steven had indeed held the advantage at first, but Groudon and Kyogre’s stamina seemed bottomless. Instead, the five Trainers’ main Pokémon were beginning to run out of strength from constantly clashing with them.
If this dragged on… the ones whose stamina would be exhausted would not be Groudon and Kyogre…
Amid flames that soared into the sky, Groudon shattered through multiple layers of ice. A Solar Beam blasted open a deep-sea vortex, dragging Pokémon such as Dragalge and Kingdra into it. This marked the battle’s formal transition into a prolonged war of attrition, and the situation gradually began to turn back in the Super-ancient Pokémon’s favor.
“According to legend, in ancient times, Groudon and Kyogre could battle continuously for several days over natural energy without being affected. The stamina of Super-ancient Pokémon cannot be measured by ordinary standards.”
Inside Sky Pillar, the elderly Draconid prayed for Zinnia while also praying for the Elite Four battling on Route 127.
“So this is the final plan?”
Terrance remained silent after receiving the League’s decision. In ancient times, Groudon had once fought Kyogre in a life-or-death battle. Afterward, it fell into slumber within underground magma, while Kyogre sank into the deep sea and slept as well. Their sleep lasted for hundreds or even thousands of years. Although Super-ancient Pokémon possessed nearly inexhaustible stamina, the time required to recover that stamina was equally immense. When these Legendary Pokémon went to sleep, decades could pass before they awakened. This was precisely what the Hoenn League was now counting on: fighting a battle of attrition and forcing the Super-ancient Pokémon into slumber.
This plan was similarly difficult to carry out, but in the eyes of the representatives, relying on the strength of Trainers placed far less pressure on them than using taboo weapons with severe consequences. After all, the League Elite Four themselves bore the responsibility of protecting the region’s safety.
After the four Elite Four and Steven formally engaged Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, these representatives saw hope in the Trainers and placed all their hopes on them. In response to this decision, Lance, who had already retrieved his main Pokémon in Sootopolis City, and Contest Master Wallace set out for Route 127 as the second wave of reinforcements.
“What an idiotic decision. Is the stamina of Super-ancient Pokémon something that can be exhausted through an ordinary battle?” Terrance’s Rotom Pokédex had already calculated that, judging from the energy fluctuations of Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, even if the scale of the battle doubled, they would still be able to continue fighting for several days.
Meanwhile, the Elite Four’s main Pokémon were life-forms that could potentially lose all their stamina within just a few minutes during a high-intensity battle under standard competitive rules.
Between Super-ancient Pokémon and ordinary Pokémon, there was an almost insurmountable gap at the very essence of life itself.
“They won’t give up until they hit a dead end.” Terrance sighed. He had no idea what decision the League would make if the Trainers were forced to retreat, but he could also understand the League’s helplessness, because even he could not think of a better solution.
Today’s broadcast from Route 127 had been interrupted. Because the citizens of Sootopolis City could clearly feel the shockwaves from the battle, the online world immediately erupted into an uproar, with people from every region demanding that the Hoenn League provide real-time updates on the situation at Route 127.
“I’m Mira. At 7:37 this morning, Groudon and Kyogre broke free from Elite Four Terrance’s suppression and underwent the legendary Primal Reversion, gaining even greater power… At present, Hoenn Champion Steven and the four Elite Four have already engaged Groudon and Kyogre in battle. Due to the intensity of the battle’s shockwaves, I’m currently unable to provide a live broadcast, but I will continue bringing everyone updates as the situation develops.”
Sootopolis City, the city closest to Route 127, had already experienced a small-scale tremor. Although no buildings had been destroyed, it still caused a certain degree of panic. If the League had not anticipated this situation in advance and maintained a well-organized public security system, Sootopolis City would probably have already descended into chaos.
