Nanu lived at the Po Town Police Station. When Terrance arrived in Po Town on Ula’ula Island, it was drizzling.
After reaching the police station, Terrance knocked on the door. Nanu, whose deep-set eyes made him look sleep-deprived, opened it.
Upon seeing the visitor, Nanu remained silent for a moment, quickly recalling who Terrance was.
“The kid who was following Victor around on Mount Lanakila?” Nanu still had an impression of Terrance—especially that Altaria with impressive strength.
“It’s Terrance, not ‘kid,’” Terrance said with a wry smile.
“Mm, come in.” Nanu pushed the door open and went inside alone. Terrance followed him into the police station.
After finding a seat for Terrance, Nanu got straight to the point. “Coming to see me in this kind of weather—what’s the matter?”
“You’re researching the ‘Ultra Wormhole,’ aren’t you? Last time on Mount Lanakila, you were looking for possible locations where one might appear.” Terrance got straight to the topic.
“Hmm…” Nanu sat across from Terrance, tapping his fingers on the table, lost in thought.
“Victor told you?”
“Well… the conversation back on Mount Lanakila pretty much gave it away.” Terrance sighed helplessly.
Nanu thought back and realized that was indeed the case.
“That’s right, I have been searching for Ultra Wormholes. But what does that have to do with you?”
Terrance replied, “Not much, to be honest… but I’m very interested in Ultra Wormholes and have some information. I was wondering if we could exchange intel?”
“I want to know where Ultra Wormholes appear—ideally, I’d like to see one with my own eyes.”
After hearing this, Nanu laughed. Looking at the young, still-wet-behind-the-ears kid in front of him, he wondered where this confidence came from.
“Don’t go getting curious about everything just because you have a bit of skill. What’s behind the Ultra Wormholes is far more complicated than you think. At your age, you should just stay put.”
Terrance shook his head. “You were teammates with Mr. Looker, weren’t you?”
“Looker?” Nanu was startled. Upon hearing that name, old memories resurfaced in his mind.
“Yeah, three years ago, I worked with Mr. Looker to take down a poacher gang. I heard about you from him,” Terrance said unabashedly, trying to build rapport.
In truth, Looker hadn’t shared much about Nanu with Terrance—he had only picked up bits and pieces of information. But that didn’t stop Terrance from making his own deductions.
A long time ago, Looker and Nanu carried out a special mission in Alola. The mission ultimately ended in failure, and Nanu resigned from the International Police, retiring to Alola to become an Island Kahuna.
The first part of this information was what Terrance had deduced from what Looker and Master Victor had told him. As for what happened afterward, a little asking around on Ula’ula Island was enough to find out.
By confirming the timeline, it was easy to conclude that Nanu resigned because of the mission’s failure.
Adding to that, Nanu had spent years in Alola paying special attention to Ultra Wormholes. It wasn’t hard for Terrance to deduce that the mission back then was likely related to “Ultra Beasts” or “Ultra Space.”
Nanu was clearly not fooled by Terrance and simply let out a light snort. “Looker isn’t so reckless that he’d tell you about classified missions.”
Terrance chuckled. “Of course not. But even so, it’s not hard to guess. It has to be related to Ultra Wormholes, right? Otherwise, why would you care so much about them?”
“Since you’re Victor’s student, you should know quite a bit, shouldn’t you?” Nanu said.
“He’s spent years in Alola assisting the Aether Foundation in researching Ultra Beasts. Ultra Wormholes were where those creatures first appeared. Those things are far from friendly Pokémon—if you’re not careful, you might even get eaten. That’s why you should stop looking for Ultra Wormholes.”
Nanu and Looker had once tried to capture an Ultra Beast. But at the time, they lacked the capability to succeed, which made Nanu well aware of the Ultra Beasts’ strength—something no ordinary Trainer could handle.
His warning to Terrance was out of concern for his safety.
However, Terrance was clearly unwilling to back down. He said, “Please don’t worry. I can handle some danger.”
With his Mega Altaria, Terrance had some confidence in his abilities.
Still, no matter what Terrance said, Nanu refused to reveal any more information about Ultra Wormholes, leaving Terrance feeling utterly helpless.
In Terrance’s mind, Nanu had spent all these years in Alola and was even chosen as an Island Kahuna by the guardian deity—he must know a lot.
Unfortunately…
Since asking directly led nowhere, Terrance had no choice but to take out his Island Challenge Amulet, demonstrating his resolve to undertake the Island Challenge.
“This thing… You got it from Hala?”
All four Island Kahunas had the authority to grant an Island Challenge Amulet. This amulet was universally recognized throughout Alola. Since Terrance had presented his proof of qualification for the Island Challenge, Nanu had no choice but to offer him a trial.
“Then I’ll be counting on you, Mr. Nanu.”
Since he couldn’t obtain information directly, Terrance could only go and face this island’s Totem Pokémon. The trials of the Island Challenge were all related to Totem Pokémon and the guardian deities, so there was no way Terrance would let this opportunity slip by.
Looking at Terrance’s calm face, Nanu wanted to say something, but the words got stuck in his throat, and he couldn’t bring himself to speak. In the end, he let out a sigh and said, “Alright.”
As long as Terrance didn’t try to make contact with the Ultra Beasts, the Island Challenge was the kind of challenge someone his age should be undertaking.
Nanu’s Persian had fought against Terrance’s Altaria before, so he already had a standard by which to judge Terrance’s strength. With that in mind, he quickly decided on the trial.
“The trial begins tomorrow.”
…
…
The next day.
“Where are we going?” Terrance asked.
“Hokulani Observatory.”
Hokulani Observatory was located on Mount Hokulani on Ula’ula Island. It was a facility dedicated to observing and studying various cosmic phenomena.
Mount Hokulani was the second-highest mountain in Alola. When Nanu brought Terrance here, Terrance immediately began making guesses.
Which Totem Pokémon would he be facing next…?
Terrance wasn’t very familiar with Mount Hokulani, nor did he know much about the Pokémon distribution here. Compared to Melemele Island, the Pokémon populations on Ula’ula Island were much larger in scale.
However, before even reaching Hokulani Observatory, after ascending Mount Hokulani, Terrance had already caught sight of the Totem Pokémon that would be testing him.
“Vikavolt…”
Nanu’s expression remained unchanged as he looked at the massive Vikavolt standing out among the colony in the distance. Then, he turned to face Terrance.
“Defeat that Vikavolt using only one Pokémon. That is your trial.”
Terrance’s expression shifted slightly. This Vikavolt was clearly much stronger than the Totem Raticate from Melemele Island. Furthermore, due to the unique traits of this Pokémon, Terrance knew that defeating it with just one Pokémon would be several times harder than dealing with the Totem Raticate.
